HISTORY OF BURIAL GROUND

The Maplewood Cemetery is one of the two oldest in East Abington

(Rockland). Eleazor Whiting buried a child here in 1746, the first

known death. This stone is no longer standing. The oldest marker is

that of Captain John Burrell in 1754. Maplewood Cemetery has been

in continuous use since that date. Some of the earliest lots were lost.

when Webster Street was widened, and when neighboring driveways were

built. The cemetery received a granite wall boundary, probably in

the early twentieth century, which is still well maintained.
