STORY OF BURIAL GROUNDThis site was first used by
Laban Stetson as a burial place forhis child. The land was given for a cemetery by Captain Abraham Shaw.
The earliest surviving gravestone is 1770, although Ida R. Totman, in
her 1912 paper. "Cemeteries of Abington", states that the cemetery was
used earlier than
that. (Totman. page 5). Caleb Chard, who served in theFrench and Indian War and in
'the Revolutionary War under General Washington, is buried here. Along with the Maplewood Cemetery, this is one of the two oldest in Rockland. Members of the earliest families of East Abington are buried here, including Beals, Shaws. Pools,. Whitings , Vinings and Curtese.
