House Picture Needed, 112 Arlington St.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE :

This Greek Revival style house illustrates a popular mode in Rockland with its recessed side porch and gable end facing the street. The full pediment in the gable end has nicely molded raking cornices which terminate in a redundant cornice return. Original six over six windows are still present in the gable end. The main entrance, located in the center of the south elevation, has typical sidelights.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE :

Arlington Street was not laid until sometime between 1892-1896. This house was moved here at the time from an unknown location. Based on its architectural features, the house probably constructed in the 1840's or early 1850's.

The 1903 map of Rockland indicates the owner at the time was Stephen M. Howe's, who apparently rented it to William P. Anderson, a locksmith. The Anderson family later purchased the building. William was joined by Fred Anderson, an employee at Prior's Stay Factory and Edith, who worked at the tack factory.
