House Picture Needed, 158 Central Street
This house is interesting for the traditional features of its design, which date back to the eighteenth century. The five-bay facade, low hipped roof and second story windows positioned close to the plate are typical of Georgian and Federal style buildings. Yet the house was built around 1864 with Italianate style ornamentation typical of that period. This includes the long narrow windows, the portico with ornate brackets and the round arch windows in the front door. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Mary and John Fitzgerald purchased this property from Daniel Ford in 1864. The house was probably built at that time. John Fitzgerald was a shoemaker. like most of the early residents on this street and in Rockland in general. (Although the 1867 Directory lists him as a laborer.) The house remains in the Fitzgerald family, as the present owner is a Fitzgerald.
