House Picture Needed, 216  Central Street

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

The simple lines of this house reveal little in the way of architectural styling. In plan, the narrow gable end to the street with an attached ell was common to the vernacular Greek Revival the this region. In this instance, however, the builder avoided any architectural embellishments except for the porch posts and sidelights flanking the many design variations popular for porches in Rockland during the 1850's and early 1860's.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The early occupants of this house are not recorded. Albert Lufkin, listed on the 1874 map, was a shoe stitcher living here at that time. A later owner was Everett Beal, part manager of the Beal & McCarthy's piano store. In 1907, Everett deeded the house to William H. Beal, a clerk at Beal & McCarthy's. The Beal's owned the house until 1930.
