House Picture Needed, 99 Centre Avenue
As originally built, this house was a small Greek Revival cottage consisting of only the main section without the west wing,. In the typical fashion of the style, the house has a gable end to the street with cornice returns, corner pilasters and an entrance off to one side. Directly above the door is a canopy supported by Italianate style brackets. The appearance of Greek Revival characteristics on a house built so late for the style is not uncommon in Rockland, especially when combined with Italianate style ornamentation. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE John Dempsy purchased this lot near Studley Pond from George Totman in 1871. At that time Totman lived at 13 Centre Avenue, and he apparently laid out the lots on this side of the road for housing development. Dempsy's house was one of the first to be built in a development which by no means realized its potential as only tow were constructed by 1879. Dempsy's occupation was edge maker. Later owners of the house used it for rental property.
