Rockland Historic Commission Meeting Minutes 5 December 2002
Those members in attendance were: John Burrows, Peter Dow, Gerry Martin, Tim Woodward, and George Dearth (Associate).
I. The meeting was called to order at 7: 10 PM.
2. Minutes: The Minutes of the 21 November 2002 were approved.
3. Treasurer's report:
General: $623.14 Donation: $893 .22 Postal: $19.59 Total: $1,539.95 No outstanding payables.
3. Old Business:
A. 1745 House Update:
-Jerry and John replaced last major beam and now need to finsh joists.
-Jerry in contact with contractor who will remove shutters and cover windows in order to make the building
weather tight RHC voted to approve $200 payment for to seal up 7 windows and seal gap at back on house where kitchen door is. This includes labor and materials (~ plastic). Jerry will arrange to work date.
-Roof is still a problem. No response from WRPS ad soliciting volunteers It is
likely that we will have to cover with a tarp. Final decision to be made at next meeting.
- Tim confirmed that John Beam roofing service will not be available, despite family connection.
C. Web Site www.historicrockland.com:
-Hits to the site now at 1779: looks like slight increase likely due to tour publicity and additional links/sites adding
on name (ehistory.com) -Website's guest book receiving good responses with several people asking for infoffi1ation about families and houses. Inquiries on Reed St., Codman Building
& and Linden St
D. RHC Sign(Hingham and Webster St) -Nothing new on sign. Awaiting Knights of Columbus meeting on 12/12 at 8 PM when the sign win be discussed, including the wording. As discus.~ at the 11/7 RHC
meeting. we prefer the use of "historic district" or Rockland center:" some K of C members seem to object to use
or "business district."
E. 2002 RHC Holiday House Tour -Sold 5 tickets in advance thus far at the Town Clerk's office.
-Jerry and his wife will be stationed at the Congregational Church. No definite commitment from Rick Gay on his availability, but pastor Dowell says there will be someone available from 1-4 PM. There will be a Messiah Choral Sing from 3-5PM in the church.
-Peter , Tim, and Lori will be at GAR Hall. Tim will coordinate with rest of GAR members to have others ready to give tours and handle the crowd (hopefully).
-George and Joe will coordinate between the Holland and Springhetti houses: one at each.
-Mary Parsons will be available for some part of the tour: she will likely go to Hol1ands.
-Patriot Ledger ran small announcement Mariner win nm article on 1216 edition. Enterprise ran front page article (local section) this week.
-No large yard posters available at this point: Tim/Jerry win try to get some made
tomorrow. If not successful, Peter win make them up.
-RHC members blanketed town with the tour flyers- good coverage throughout business district stores~ market St stores, T
station etc.
-Peter will pick up 6 dozen donuts from Honey Dew on 1216. Food will also include brownies, soda, coffee (Jerry picked up donation from DunkiI Donuts).
-Peter and Tim will decorate and set up GAR Hall on 12/6 and 1217 AM.
RHC members will meet at GAR around noon to coordinate.
-Peter will display various RHC souvenirs for sale, and Tim will look into what GAR has available to sell as well.
4. New Business:
-Letter offering Rockland Town reports from 1970 onward: We are interested and will arrange donation.
